Telecoms Infrastructure for Next Generation Services
May 26, 2006

Carrier networks aren't ready for high-end services like High Definition TV over phone lines, or for running 10-Gig Ethernet to the kerb, or for offering or enforcing large-scale service level agreements across the metro area, or hosting IP-based business continuity solutions. Yet that's what customers are demanding: There are opportunities, many opportunities, for offering value-added network services, whether it's VDSL2, affordable optical backhaul or intelligent IP gateways. How can carriers enhance their service offerings and upgrade their networks with the lowest possible CAPEX and OPEX?

Alcatel, Redback put Cisco, Juniper on edge
May 15, 2006

Alcatel and Redback Networks made significant gains in the multiservice edge router market in the first quarter, threatening the long-held leadership of Cisco Systems and Juniper Networks, according to Dittberner Associates.

Redback bumped Juniper from third place in the market during the first quarter--but just barely, Dittberner said. Redback's multiservice edge router revenue jumped 27% sequentially in the quarter, giving it $41.3 million in revenue and slightly more than 15% of the market. Juniper, meanwhile, rode a small sequential revenue decline to $40.8 million and slightly less than 15% of the market.

Driving the market are IP TV, carrier Ethernet and multiservice networking
May 12, 2006

Three trends are driving the edge router market: IP TV, carrier Ethernet and multiservice networking. These are also the reasons that the edge router market is expected to grow 21% this year to just less than $3.2 billion, the same rate of growth for 2005, according to the Dell'Oro Group.

Edge routing is crucial in IP TV for Ethernet and broadband aggregation, and IP services delivery. Ethernet and broadband aggregation routers collect thousands of Ethernet and DSL access feeds from subscribers for connection to IP TV content. IP service edge routers personalize those connections by identifying the subscriber and implementing video subscription policies and preferences to the user/content interaction.

Insider buys $42M in Redback stock
May 11, 2006

In advance of a proposed public offering of the company's stock, a group led in part by one of Redback Networks' directors is purchasing nearly $42 million in the company's stock, regulatory filings revealed this week.

On May 9, TCV Funds agreed to purchase 1,927,500 shares of Redback common stock from Quattro Global Capital (advisors to the Alta Partners investment group) at $21.75 per share. TCV Funds was set up by Technology Crossover Ventures, a Redback investor whose director, John Drew, also sits on Redback's board of directors.

Insiders taking a greater stake in the company is generally an encouraging sign to investors, said Joanna Makris, an analyst who covers Redback for Canaccord Adams, and TCV's move is no exception. "The increased stake, to a lot of people, shows validation," she said.
